Jayson Williams
Former NBA star Jayson Williams is sentenced to five years in prisonThis was a confusing tragedy from the start. But it was about one more wealthy, celebrity athlete who wanted deadly toys he neither needed nor knew how to use. It wasn't the first time he'd acted irresponsibly with guns. Williams admitted nearly shooting New York Jets wide receiver Wayne Chrebet on his skeet-shooting range, & was accused but never charged with firing a semiautomatic weapon into the parking lot at the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Add to that a couple of bar fights. It's one thing to be seriously screwed up, but it's dangerous to be around Jayson Williams.
ALEXANDRIA TOWNSHIP -- Former New Jersey Net Jayson Williams was sentenced today to five years in prison for fatally shooting a limousine driver in 2002.
The 42-year-old retired athlete pleaded guilty last month to fourth-degree aggravated assault for the death of Costas "Gus" Christofi, 55, at the estate Williams owned in Alexandria Township. Williams will have to serve a minimum of 18 months in prison before he is eligible for parole.

I love that comment. Very insightful, and right on point. In 1999 I was an invited guest to Jayson Williams' home. I had no idea making home alive was actually a privilege. Great blog site Bob, I truly enjoy it.

What he did was irresponsible and utterly stupid. He spent many $$$ and wasted taxpayer $$$ and time trying to stay out of jail, when he was guilty from day ONE. He should have been sentenced for much longer.
The plea deal saved the cost of another trial, & perhaps he's also negotiating a financial settlement with the Christofi family.
The Christofi family settled in 2003 for $2,000,000.00. Make no mistake, Williams did cost the taxpayers quite a bit of money, but as Bob pointed out, the plea deal did curtail the cost. It's a good thing they settled when they did, since it's unlikely Williams could pay that high amount now. His lack of income, high legal fees, divorce, and of course the financial meltdown, have left him yet another star athlete at the brink of financial doom.
