It won't be easy, Mister President
The truth is, the American people are not angry because of all the money the government has spent this year -- except, of course, the people who believe Obama was born in Kenya, is a Muslim, and a Socialist. The rest of the people, the ones Obama has a chance of reaching, are angry because the vast majority of that money went to -- and continues to go to -- rescuing Wall Street, which has thanked taxpayers by reducing lending, recording record profits, paying out massive bonuses, and using our money to pay lobbyists to scuttle financial reform. That is what is putting voters on the electoral warpath.Reading the transcript of the SOTU speech, I was relieved at least that the Prez hadn't really given up any serious ground. He's not Bill Clinton circa 1995 & stuck with a new Repug congress. But Obama needs to do more of what he did today: Go out & campaign. I've seen the numbers from the 1994 "Contract With America" debacle. We know what turned it from traditional midterm losses into a rout was the failure of Democrats & pro-Clinton independents to vote. There was no upswing in Repug votes over 1992. They just showed up at the polls. In his one brilliant idea, Newt Gingrich made that midterm a presidential election with a theme instead of a candidate.
Democrats have three political positives this year: They control both houses of congress; they have a Democratic President who more or less knows what he wants; Republicans are distrusted even more than Democrats. There's no evidence that the majority of Americans want Republicans running the country again. Newt's appeal was basically, "Give us a chance, we'll do better." Well, even teabaggers now know they either won't or they can't. They're deeper in the pockets of banks & corporations than Democrats, their empty form of "populism" can be discredited, there's still time.
Obama needs to attack Republicans as obstructionists & demand that they present alternatives. Because when it comes down to details, to alternatives, Republicans are hardly unified. He also must convince his base that its vote in November is just as crucial as it was two years ago. It won't be easy.

You Obama people just can't see the forest for the trees. He's been trouble since the first day and when we have such a debt we'll never get out it...oh wait...we already have it!

You really can't be serious. There is a REPUBLICAN Senator from MA, in a seat held by the almighty Kennedy's since 1952. And you think that the people still want Obama's agenda to continue? Look at what the people of MA has to say. Now, if you are taking comfort in what Obama said in his speech, I wouldn't. He is the master of saying one thing to satisfy his base, but then doing something totally different. Since I am conservative, I am thankful that the Big O is one of the most ineffective Presidents ever in the White House. His lack of executive experience has derailed his entire legacy. Once the mid terms are over, you will see a contrite Obama, one very similar to Bill Clinton of 1995. Really though, I want you all to continue thinking the American people support your liberal agenda lock step. As long as you believe that, my side will win.

Tony, an ideologue is someone who stands on a point on an arc & shouts, "Here!" The "American people" generally don't stand on points. I actually have some "conservative" views, But every voting day they are faced with a here/there decision. One point or another, & they can feel like Zeno's arrow getting from here to there or there to here. What's my agenda? Liberal? Ever hear me talk about urban crime, two-parent families, the United States Navy? How is it that I can be for John Cage & yet for Bobby Hackett's easy listening music? Doesn't that require I trick myself into contradictory aethetics?
Bob, I agree with your counterpoint. And I must say, I find your blog interesting, in that you do not continually blast all conservative issues. I enjoy your perspective on most issues, and I give your arguments for the liberal issues more credibility, since you seem more objective. I might add, even more objective then I, when it comes to my conservative values. I found your blog through my ex friend (her idea) Carrie, and I do enjoy it. It's a shame that some people are too immature to accept others have different political opinions.

Here's my conservative friend, X Ray Burns. I think he'd love Carrie. They wouldn't even discuss politics. They'd probably talk about Nelson Riddle & Billy May.
I'm sure he would, Carrie was a great person. We were friends for years, but that was a different time. I will check out your conservative friend's site.

And for Tony, he should know that Bob is the reason I have my blog. He and I are different types of bloggers, but I would never have done it without his help, and I've learned a lot from him (about blogging, damn it, not politics LOL) and I'm still a flaming liberal, and he's ... well ... he's just DJ Rix!
But when it comes to music ... we are on the same highway, so to speak. That transcends politics.
