Humes Music Store

Morris Ave. is now anchored by popular Colombian-flavored cafes, with beauty parlors & other service businesses, it's been getting through the recession without many storefront vacancies. In fact, there's been a good deal of renovating over the past year. If Elizabeth ever had a candidate for a commuter retail & residential district, the stretch of Morris Ave. between the train station & Kean University was probably it. But the city was uninterested in master planning around the underutilized train station plaza.

"If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be." Thomas Jefferson
Yes, Mr. Humes showed up EVERY DAY in a jacket and tie to help people select their classics and their elementary sheets that would help them learn to play their instruments. He was a favorite among renowned music teachers who are long gone now. And yes there was a time when a sign saying that the Humes Music Store was "closed today due to illness in family. " ...I hung that sign myself, in tears, knowing that my Father would not have been alright with it. He was Mr. Humes. He was getting ready to die. Those of us who knew him as more than that guy who wore a tie and jacket on Morris Avenue might understand that he was worthy of far more than the comment that was left here. priscilla.crater@yahoo.com
